Odessa-Brody-Plotsk is ideal for Kazakh oil

October 10, 2003

Kazakhstan national oil and gas company KazMunaiGaz reconfirms its interest in using the oil pipeline Odessa-Brody to supply Kazakh oil to European markets.

KazMunaiGaz's managing director for transport and service projects Kairgeldy Kabyldin told this the KIOGE-2003 international oil and gas conference in Almaty on Wednesday.

He says the republic prefers this route to Russian pipeline because it allows to pump oil without affecting it quality.

"This route is interesting to us, we would certainly like to use it," Kabyldin emphasized, "There are certain controversies and bickering in Ukraine, but basically, Odessa-Brody is an ideal route."

Earlier, KazMunaiGaz has showed interest in taking part in the construction of the Brody-Plotsk pipeline (Poland).

The first stage of the Odessa-Brody was completed in May, 2002. Its capacity is 9-14,5 mn. tons of oil annually with 200 thousand c.m. reservoir park

The government of Ukraine has postponed final judgement about the use of the pipeline Odessa-Brody, having decided to attract and independent expert to estimate prospects of of intended or reverse flow of oil.

Russian and Caspian suppliers had been pressuring Ukraine's cash-strapped government to decide the pipeline's direction for months, in a bid to boost exports to Europe while oil prices are high. Analysts said whoever gets their oil into the pipeline first will enjoy greater influence over the decision on permanent use.
